Share:

Hello everyone, today I'll be unboxing and showcasing the FNIRSI DPS-150, a lightweight, high-performance, programmable, digital DC power supply with adjustable output, which you can pick up for an incredibly great price. The unit features a Type-C input and multiple power supply modes, allowing precise adjustment of voltage from 0 to 30V and current from 0 to 5A.

Inside the box, you'll find the main unit, two alligator clip leads with banana plugs, a USB-A to Micro USB power cable, and a user manual. On top of that, the device comes with plenty of smart features that you're sure to love.

Is this the best budget lab power supply?

Turning It On

The LCD screen tilts 90° and shows both numerical readings and graphs for monitoring purposes. The front-facing buttons allow you to navigate and adjust various settings. These two ports are where the banana plugs are inserted. This rotating knob is to ajust voltage and amps. This is the power button used to activate the output ports.

On the back, you’ll find the MicroUSB, USB-C, and barrel jack ports for powering the unit.

Now, let's connect the USB-C cable and power on the unit. The unit can be powered by a power bank, DC adapter, or a PD/QC fast charger. The unit accepts PC, QC, and DC inputs, features programmable outputs, and includes six preset voltage and current settings.

At the top of the screen, the input voltage is shown. The device is a step-down converter, so it can reduce the input voltage to any lower voltage of your choice.
On the left, the output voltage, output current, and output power are displayed in larger text, while the preset voltage and current appear in smaller text.
On the right, you’ll find the energy consumption, the total time the unit has been powered on, and the presets listed at the bottom.

The red "STOP" indicator next to the operating temperature means the unit is in standby mode and not currently providing any output. Pressing the button on the right activates the output, at which point "STOP" changes to "RUN," and the banana plug holders light up.

Pressing the double arrow button allows you to adjust the output voltage and current in real time using the rotary knob.
Long pressing the double arrow button allows you to toggle between graph and normal mode.

To change a preset: hold the "M" button, select a preset, set voltage/current and save. The unit offers 6 preset modes.

Pressing the "Home" button opens the internal configuration menu, where you can adjust settings such as Language, Theme, Brightness, Volume, Overvoltage, Overcurrent, Overpower, Overtemperature, and all other parameters.

Let's perform a quick test with a multimeter to verify that the output matches the selected voltage. As you can see, the multimeter reads approximately the same voltage as our selected output voltage. Great - it works!

Features & Specs

Here are the main product specifications of this unit displayed on-screen. The product operates in "step-down mode", so ensure that the input voltage is always higher than the output voltage.
The unit offers over voltage, under voltage, over current, over temperature, short circuit, reverse input and out protection.

How To Order

The FNIRSI DPS-150 can be purchased through their official website or via AliExpress; both links are provided in the description below. When ordering, you have the option to select a kit that best suits your needs, ranging from a simple basic unit, with the choice to include a EU or US power adapter.
Since I live in Australia, I went with the "Standard Packaging" which does not include the power adapter.

Demo

Now, let’s perform a quick test using a 12V DC motor. Keep in mind that when powering inductive or capacitive loads, it’s best to connect the load before switching on the device’s output. Holding down the updown arrow toggles between the normal and graph view. As you can see, by raising or lowering the voltage, I can increase or decrease the fan’s speed.

Now, the interesting bit. The FNIRSI DPS-150 is a programmable DC power supply that features PC connectivity for remote control and monitoring via a computer. The application allows you to move beyond manual front-panel operation and manage the device from a desktop application.
Use the USB-to-MicroUSB cable form the box to connect the unit to your computer's USB port.
The PC software provides comprehensive control and monitoring capabilities, transforming your computer into the primary interface for the power supply.

The key functions of the application includes:

  • Displays real-time operational status: The top left shows the real-time voltage and current graphs and can log voltage and current curves over time, allowing you to capture and analyze performance data.
  • Adjust output voltage and current, turn the output on/off, and configure other parameters directly from your computer.
  • Programmable Output Functions: Create and run automated sequences such as voltage sweeps, scans, and other programmable test routines.
  • Preset Management: It allows you to manage the 6 presets using keyboard and mouse.
  • Device Configuration: It allows you to adjust internal settings such as overvoltage, overcurrent,over-temperature etc.
  • Firmware Upgrades: The PC connection also allows you to update the firmware when a new version is released.

Compact and portable, this space-saving unit is ideal for labs, repairs, and DIY projects. I’ve housed all components in a custom Pelican case; you can find the link to the box in the description below.

The device itself acts as a data logger, and the output can be monitored. Let me know what you think.
